Highlights from the 2006-07 academic year:

September 2006

Dion Harris, an MBA student in the Evening-Weekend program and our BBSA past president, represented Haas at the National Black MBA Association Conference in Atlanta. Read about his experience in the member highlights section.

October 2006

BBSA volunteers greeted guests during the annual Haas Diversity in Business Conference. Sid Reel, Director of Culture and Diversity at Hewlett-Packard was the keynote speaker. Panels discussed pertinent topics such as "Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling" and "Leading and Managing Diverse Organizations." Visit http://diversity.haas.berkeley.edu/conference/ for additional information. BBSA members also participated in a student panel during the Diversity Workshop for prospective students.

December 2006

We supported the local chapters of the National Black MBA Association and the National Black Accountants Association during a holiday toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots. The event was an opportunity to support a great charity and meet other Bay Area professionals.

February 2007

In celebration of Black History Month, the BBSA and the MBA Association VP of Diversity sponsored an event at the Julia Morgan Center of the Arts. The opening night performance of Buffalo Soldiers A Tale Lost was a thoughtful reflection of the experiences of African-American and Native American soldiers during the Indian Wars.

During February the BBSA also supported Haas fundraising efforts for Special Olympics and the Alameda Point Collaborative.

March 2007

BBSA members joined the San Francisco Chapter of the National Black MBA Association at the Museum of the African Diaspora for a local professional networking event that celebrated the recent opening of the museum.

April and May 2007

In April, the BBSA hosted a weekly Haas tradition - Bar of the Week - at Paragon, a local bar/lounge at The Claremont Hotel. During May we reached out to prospective students at the San Francisco National Black MBA Association career fair.

However, Days at Haas in April and May, our admit weekends, were the main events during the weeks before final exams. The BBSA pulled out all the stops to welcome new students. Our events included participation in the following activities:

  • Pre-Diversity Reception in the Bank of America forum - Light refreshments and casual conversation were on hand to get the weekend started.
  • Club fair - A great opportunity to be reminded of all there is at Haas outside the classroom. At the BBSA table students could learn more about what we do, join our mailing list and snag some candy!
  • Diversity Student/Alumni Mixer - Graciously hosted by alumna Monica Stevens, the night was an opportunity for admitted students to meet the other half of the Haas community (alumni).
  • Consumption Function - Last but not least, LAHBA and the BBSA sponsored a Carnival themed festival that was a perfect cap to the weekend with a wide variety of food and live entertainment.
