On March 1st and 2nd, something amazing happened at the Haas School of Business. MBAs from UC-Berkeley, MIT, Northwestern, Georgia, USC, Brandeis and UCLA, came together to compete in the inaugural Education Leadership Case Competition (ELCC). These talented teams worked around the clock to develop and present new strategies to help Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) come one step closer to giving its students what they all deserve – great schools, high-quality teachers, and bright futures.

Barak Ben-Gal, OUSD’s budget director and a central character in the case, plans to “steal ideas from each and every team’s presentation to take back and use” in Oakland. He was so impressed that he invited the winning team from UC Berkeley to present their plan to his leadership team so OUSD can put their integrated strategy for budget reform to work as soon as possible.

This year’s competition made a big difference for Oakland, but there are more schools, education nonprofits, and districts who need our help. Thanks to all who made this possible, and we look forward to an even better event next year!

TEAMS & PRESENTATIONS

All teams developed exceptional and impressive presentations, and all judges commended the quality and effort put forth. Barak Ben-Gal from OUSD highlighted aspects of each plan that he would incorporate into the district's work moving forward.
