2008 ELCC: Rebuilding New Orleans Public Schools

On February 14 and 15, 2008, Haas hosted the 2nd Annual Education Leadership Case Competition (ELCC), a showcase for MBAs and other graduate students from top universities nationwide. The purpose of the case competition is to bring attention to a critical, real-time issue in education, and to provide an opportunity for talented and dedicated graduate students to create potential solutions for the issue.

The 2008 ELCC concentrated its efforts on helping New Orleans Public Schools. The district has struggled with years of student underperformance, financial mismanagement and corruption prior to Hurricane Katrina. However, in the wake of the storm’s devastation has come an opportunity to rebuild the school system with innovative initiatives. In February, 12 student teams provided real and practical solutions to educational stakeholders in the city of New Orleans, and the two-day competition culminated with first place going to the Kellogg School of Management and second place to Stanford University.

The students’ ideas and recommendations impressed the judging panel, which included 5 education leaders from New Orleans. Rayne Martin, Chief Intelligence Officer for the Recovery School District in New Orleans, said she “fully intends to take all the suggestions back to the Recovery School District…and hopefully contribute to the success of students in New Orleans”. Our competition also attained significant media coverage.
