Impact

2007: Oakland Unified School District
In 2007, the inaugural case focused on Results-Based Budgeting in the Oakland Unified School District. The competition was a success according to district representatives, participants and press. Several prominent media outlets published pieces on the ELCC’s innovative approach to education reform, including the Oakland Tribune, CNN, ABC News, and the Financial Times.

2008: New Orleans Public Schools
The 2008 ELCC concentrated its efforts on helping New Orleans Public Schools. The district has struggled with years of student underperformance, financial mismanagement and corruption prior to Hurricane Katrina. However, in the wake of the storm’s devastation has come an opportunity to rebuild the school system with innovative initiatives. Twelve student teams provided real and practical solutions to educational stakeholders in the city of New Orleans, and the two-day competition culminated with first place going to the Kellogg School of Management and second place to Stanford University.

The case focuses on the DCPS human capital value chain and how DCPS can more effectively recruit and retain high quality teachers.
