Spring 2007

4/11/2007   Presentation of Internal Auditting, 6:30pm, C250

There will be yet another exclusive finance club career presentation on Wednesday, April 11th at 6:60pm in room C250.  The East Bay Chapter of the Institution of Internal Auditors has agreed to come on campus and give their expert insight into the fascinating world of Internal Auditing.

Internal auditors have never been more important or in more demand than they are today.  Due to the increasing complexities of business, recent fraudulent activity uncovered at major companies, more scrutiny of companies by the SEC and various regulatory bodies, and the demands now required of business due to the Sarbanes Oxley Act.  This presentation will give you and overview of the internal auditing profession and why you should consider a career in internal audit.

The presentation will include:

  • A DVD for about 20 minutes outlining what internal auditors do with excerpts from the Chief Auditors of Microsoft, and a few other Fortune 500 Companies
  • A PowerPoint (about 40 minutes), which will include:
    • What is internal auditing and why is it important?
    • Corporate Governance
    • Who are Internal auditors and what do they do?
    • Why you should consider a career in internal auditing
    • Internal audit functions & types of audits
    • Professional Licenses/Certification and Advanced Degrees
    • The Coso Control Matrix
    •  Sarbanes Oxley
  • Recent salary survey
  • Information on the Northern Ca. East Bay Chapter of the IIA
  • Question and answer period.

Please visit CareerNet to sign up for this event (listed under Workshop as World of Internal Auditing by Institution of Internal Auditors).  There is limited seating so, we are giving priority to members of the finance club.  That being said, if you are interested, please sign up ASAP as once we open this to non-members, seats are going to be at a premium.

Also, pizza will be available for those in attendance.

4/4/2007   Intern Panel & Club Mixer, 6-9pm, Blake's on Telegraph

There will be an exclusive finance club panel & cocktail event held at 6 pm on Wednesday, April 4th.  The event will take place at Blake's on Telegraph in Berkeley, where we have reserved a private room for discussion, drinks, and food.  Specifics of the event are as follows:

  • 6pm until 9pm, or whenever you feel like leaving
  • The bar is located at 2367 Telegraph (Telegraph and Durant). Click here for the map.
  • The first hour or so, there will be a panel of 2nd year finance club members who will talk to us about how to make the most out of you summer internship experience.  This panel will consist of worldly and wise 2nd years across a wide range of finance functional groups (I-banking, Investment Management, hedge funds, PE, Corporate Finance, etc.)
  • After the panel, we will open it up to drinks/food
  • The finance club will sponsor a yet-to-be determined portion of the bar tab so, get there early if you want free drinks/food
  • The lounge on the upstairs of Blake’s on Telegraph has been reserved for us – there will not be a bar up there (only on the main level) but, there will be wait staff to take drink/food orders for us

This is a great opportunity to network with fellow finance club members and give a “thank you” to any second years that may have been helpful in your internship search.  It will also serve as a valuable opportunity to learn how best to make a strong first impression this summer so that you can solidify those full-time jobs early (thus minimizing your career search next year!).

This event is only open to members of the finance club.  Non-members are welcome to attend, however they will have to join the club first.

Please RSVP to Michael_blanchard@haas.berkeley.edu if you would like to attend.

Haas alums will come to speak about the industry, and give their one-of-a-kind perspective about how to get a leg up in your buy-side job search. We have compiled an all-star cast of alumni who cover a wide spectrum of the buy-side industry. The presentation slide can be downloaded here (password protected).
