Berkeley MBA Leadership Development Series

Workshop Descriptions

Self

Stand Out: Build Your Brand:
Learn how to unearth what makes you interesting, compelling and exceptional and how to use that to achieve your professional goals. In this session, secrets to building and communicating a winning personal brand will be shared.

Leading Through Uncertainty:
Considering the increasing pace of business and technological advances, as well as unforeseeable economic upheavals, uncertainty and ambiguity will be an increasingly present factor in our business environment. Much of the training MBA students receive does not adequately address these realities of the business world. Most MBA students are particularly uncomfortable with uncertainty/ambiguity.  Therefore, the ability to embrace both will be crucial for career success.  This program seeks to help students feel more comfortable with the discomfort of uncertainty/ambiguity, help them be less afraid of these feelings, and give them specific tools and practices to learn how to embrace ambiguity.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There:
Learn how to achieve positive changes in behavior that can help you become more successful. This workshop addresses the problems that accompany success and how to overcome them.

Managerial Decision Making:
The human mind is a magnificently powerful tool.  Unfortunately, it does not come with an instruction manual.  Our ignorance about how our minds work has profound consequences for individual behavior, markets, and organizations.  In this workshop we will discuss how people make decisions with the goal of providing guidelines and techniques for overcoming limitations and improving the quality of our decisions.  Much of what we will discuss centers on the capabilities and limitations of intuition.  Understanding the flaws of intuitive judgment can help you avoid becoming trapped by taking positions you later regret or make preventable errors.

Leadership Presence:
Discover how the theater arts can teach you as future business leaders to project energy, confidence and clarity in physical and vocal expressiveness. Learn specific skills and behaviors to help connect with others and to communicate thoughts and ideas to any audience in an effective and compelling manner.

Artful Bragging:
For most of us, “brag” is a four-letter word that conjures up unpleasant images of pushy people who are obnoxious and self-aggrandizing. In this is a high-impact, experiential workshop you will learn to sell yourselves artfully when seeking a new job, promotion or raise—without feeling or sounding like a walking billboard.

Team

Building High-Performing Teams - What Great Leaders Know and Do:
Organizations depend on diverse people coming together to problem-solve, to innovate, or to work toward a common purpose.  By matching the right leadership style to each team development stage, and by fully understanding the people, dispositions, and personalities within the team, team leaders can charter a course toward high performance, and overcome some of the most difficult obstacles that arise among human beings.  In this workshop, students will be introduced to practical tools for achieving a more thorough understanding of their team mates, and will take away techniques and processes for managing through the crucial period of team dissatisfaction.

Leading High Performance Teams:
In this interactive workshop, we discuss the role that leaders’ mindsets, or their set of beliefs and assumptions about effective leadership, play in guiding their interactions with the teams they lead. The discussion will distinguish between fixed mindsets, which presume people are born with a fixed set of talents and abilities, versus growth mindsets, which presume that hard work and effort are the keys to success. And you will explore how the psychological safety, or the willingness and ability of team members to speak up with ideas, concerns, and questions, is a powerful tool for cultivating growth mindsets and, ultimately, promote learning in dynamic business contexts.

Coaching for Optimal Performance:
Learn the importance of distinguishing between coaching for performance and coaching for development. Through interactive exercises you’ll learn to develop a coaching plan and how to have coaching conversations with your staff to ensure optimal performance.

Organization

Leading Change:
One challenge that most leaders face is an over-reliance on one or two core leadership styles that emerge from (or are constrained by) their personality. In uncertain times, however, it is even more critical that leaders sharpen their diagnostic skills to assess how they can add value to a complex myriad of situations and to broaden their leadership style portfolio to deliver that value. The objective of this session is to help you do both of these by developing an understanding of your own strengths and improvement opportunities as a leader, and contemplating how to use this knowledge to identify actions that will elevate your leadership effectiveness.

Power & Influence:
This is a highly condensed workshop covering some of the topics from the Power & Politics course. This workshop addresses how organizations distribute various resources and how managers can learn where these resources are concentrated and where they are scarce. Topics may include communication skills, control issues, rewards and penalties, and politics within the organization.

Building A Healthy Organization:
Most companies have enough organizational intelligence, intellectual property and human capital to succeed, but ultimately fail to leverage those assets because they lack ‘organizational health.’ In this workshop, you will understand the simplicity and power of organizational health, and the role a cohesive leadership team plays in building a world class organization.  Audience members will walk away with specific advice and practical tools for leading their organizations and making their teams more functional and cohesive.

Organizational Savvy:
This high-energy workshop adjusts attitudes about organizational politics and explores corporate political styles to protect you from being overly political or under-political. You’ll learn a cutting edge competency to increase influence and impact, know your “corporate buzz,” and manage negative perceptions.
