Mission Statement

The goal of the Media Services Department is to provide you with a foundation for preparing and delivering effective presentations or instructional material.

Technological advancements are providing exciting opportunities and improvements to traditional types of presentation media. The center offers you access to these new technologies, allowing you to further expand your complement of teaching and presentation resources. The Media Center staff is here to assist you in developing new and innovative resources. If you have any ideas, or would like to research the possibilities of supplementing your materials by using video, computer graphics, or producing better overhead transparencies, please call our office at 643-0431.

The Media Services Department Equipment Check-Out window is located at S300W in the Computer Center. There are many items available for check-out to help you create or improve presentations at Haas. Please visit the Media Services online Resi page to reserve or browse through the available equipment on the Reserve system. You can also use the Reserve system to reserve one of the four computer-equipped group study rooms located in the Computer Center, as well as group study rooms in the library.

AV in the Classroom

The following classrooms have installed Audio-Visual Lectern Systems: C110, C125, C135, C210, C220, C230, C320, C325, C330, F320, and computer training classroom S300T. Room C250 supports VHS video and laptop projection. In addition, Andersen Auditorium has been updated with state of the art audio-visual equipment with an easy-to-use interface. Every classroom in Haas is equipped with an overhead transparency projector.

Each Lectern features a computer with LCD monitor connected to the Haas network, a VCR, auxillary AV input, and a laptop docking station (which includes AC power, network access, VGA and audio connections). All of these connect to a ceiling-mounted LCD projector for bright, full screen presentation.

The Lecterns are metal-clad on the inside, and have an improved locking system to resist unauthorized entry. All users must have a key, issued from the Facilities office in F514. Users can also reserve a key from Media Services for one-time use only. Please see our policy on equipment checkout and return.

Policy on Equipment Checkout and Return

In order to provide effective service to all students, faculty, and staff, we need the cooperation of the entire Haas community. Unfortunately, the negligence of a few could negatively impact media services for the rest of the community. Thus HMS has developed the following policies to ensure fair service for everyone.

Checkout Facts: A Haas Fee-Paid Computer Center account is required for all equipment checkouts. You may only reserve one equipment resource at a time. Recurring reservations are not allowed. You may only reserve equipment for four hours during the day. For overnight use, checkout time is 4:00pm and return time is 9:00am the next morning. You must leave a valid ID to check out equipment.

Time Restrictions: HMS equipment is to be checked out in accordance with the time restrictions found on the online Reserve system. Any reservation that violates the time restriction is subject to adjustment by the Reserve administrators.

User Responsibility: The user is fully responsible for equipment that is checked out under his/her name. Equipment that is not returned in good condition (e.g. missing cables) is the responsibility of the user, who must pay for repair and replacement charges.

Grace Period: There is a fifteen (15) minute grace period on each reservation. If you do not pick up equipment within fifteen minutes of the start time on the reservation, HMS may cancel your reservation.

Equipment Return: All equipment must be returned on time according to the end times indicated on the Reserve system. If an item is not going to be returned on time, HMS should be notified as soon as possible as to why the item is being returned late and when the item can be expected back to HMS. If any item is returned more than fifteen minutes late, the user receives a late warning. If that user returns equipment late again, he/she may receive a suspension of media privileges for thirty days. A late warning will be kept on record for six months, and a suspension will be kept on record for one year. Subsequent suspensions may be between 30 to 90 days at the discretion of HMS. Excessively late returns without notifying HMS may result in a harsher penalty.

For further information on these policies, or to request an exception to any of the HMS policies, please contact HMS at resi@haas.berkeley.edu or (510) 643-0431.

Dish Network Satellite System

The Haas School now has access to the Dish Network. Anyone can place a request with Media Services to have a program fed to all the classrooms and any of the fifty additional rooms within the Haas School. Simply tell us what channel, start and end times, date, and room you would like to view in, and we'll take care of the rest. A staff member will arrive in the room at the appointed time to ensure the broadcast is working. In addition, a dedicated viewing monitor is installed in the MBA lounge.

Digital Editing and Video Streaming Suite

Equipment has been installed in Media Services that will allow us to edit and stream video across the Internet. Special events such as the Dean's speaker series will now be available for live viewing as well as archived for on-demand viewing at a later date. Other uses include Faculty being able to put any video footage they want to use in class on the web, eliminating the need to carry tapes around.
