About Berkeley Board Fellows
Berkeley Board Fellows is a volunteer program that places Haas MBA and Goldman MPP and other graduate students as Fellows on local nonprofit boards of directors. During the school year Fellows work closely with board members and executive directors, serve on board committees, attend full board meetings, and participate in special events and projects. Essentially, Fellows act as non-voting members of the board.
- Fellows benefit from the opportunity to learn first-hand about the rewards and challenges of board service while developing mentor relationships with members of successful boards.
- Nonprofits make connections with future board members and benefit from students’ skills in marketing, finance, strategic planning, policy analysis and the use of the Internet in their operations.
The Berkeley Board Fellows program is in its 5th year at Haas. Founded and managed by students, Board Fellows is an integral part of the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership. The program provides training, coaching and recognition of the Board Fellows.
Seven other business schools have started similar programs in the last several years: Stanford, University of Washington, Duke, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Georgetown and University of Michigan.
If you would like to participate in the program as a Berkeley Board Fellow or as a sponsoring nonprofit, please contact Nora Silver, Director of the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership (silver@haas.berkeley.edu). Read more by downloading the Berkeley Board Fellows Brochure and the Berkeley Board Fellows Nonprofit Application. Applications are accepted in August.
Students seeking additional preparation for board leadership should consider taking the one-unit course on Nonprofit Boards offered in the fall and spring semesters.
