ULI Practical Workshop Series: Harnessing the Energy of Development Opposition – Understanding the Psychology of Change
4:30 PM-6:30 PM (Hyatt Regency Hotel, Garden Room, 5 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco)
 Tim Tosta, Partner
Steefel, Levitt & Weiss

Drawing upon 30 plus years of experience as a land use attorney, as further informed by his personal experience as a cancer survivor and hospice volunteer, Mr. Tosta will offer challenging new perspectives on what the development process evokes psychologically from the communities in which it occurs. Mr. Tosta will discuss why we are all NIMBY’s at heart; how development actually threatens people’s perceptions of who they are; and the power of personal relationships in discharging the fear occasioned by the development process. Mr. Tosta will illustrate his insights with case examples and will invite audience participation in exercises to allow the audience to experience, first hand, the psychology of change.

Reception following 17:30-18:30pm

ULI Breakfast Tours - Downtown Oakland’s Transformation: A Tale of Two Mixed-Use Conversion Projects
8:00 AM-9:30 AM (1611 Telegraph Avenue, Ground Floor Corner Retail Space, Oakland, CA)
 Andrew Brog, President, Brog Properties
Tony Lee, Director, Brog Properties
Daniel Rabb, Director, Brog Properties

New York City loft developer Andrew Brog has turned his attention to Oakland, acquiring three for-sale residential and commercial condo conversion projects last year, most notably the historic Cathedral Building. Two of these projects will be highlighted and toured at the upcoming Breakfast Tour Program. The 14-story Cathedral Building, originally opened in 1914 as the Federal Realty Building and as recipient of the East Bay Business Times Structures 2006 ‘Mixed-Use’ project of the year award, stands as an icon for the transformation of downtown Oakland as it transitions into a mixed-use residential, office, and retail center. The Cathedral Building is being converted into custom-built office spaces and on the building’s top seven floors, luxurious condominium homes. Also acquired were 1755 Broadway, a 40,000 sf office building planned for residential conversion into the Marquee Lofts, and 330 13th Street, another historic structure being converted into loft-style homes and retail space. With restaurants, bars, and entertainment already emerging in surrounding Uptown buildings, Brog envisions a 24-hour-a-day neighborhood where people live, work, and shop. Please join us for a tour of the unique Cathedral Building and 1755 Broadway, both currently undergoing extensive renovations, for a look inside two projects exemplifying the vision of downtown Oakland’s renaissance. Andrew Brog, President of Brog Properties as well as Tony Lee and Daniel Rabb, both Directors of Brog Properties, will be on hand to discuss the challenges they faced and surmounted over the course of the projects.
