 Keynote Speaker
Buzz McCoy, President, Buzz McCoy Associates, Inc.

Stay a step ahead of market cycles by understanding what has happened in the past. Join us as Bowen “Buzz” McCoy shares his experiences and industry insight from his new book The Dynamics of Real Estate Capital Markets: A Practitioner’s Perspective. Spanning four decades, from the 1970’s through 2006, this collection of Mr. McCoy’s essays chronicles the dynamic changes in real estate financing from the viewpoint of a practitioner and industry leader who was making real estate deals throughout the period. A panel of leading experts will respond to Mr. McCoy’s findings and offer their own perspective on such topics as securitization issues, globalization, real estate as a maturing asset class, and the future of capital markets.

As one of the first industry leaders to emphasize ethics in real estate and to bring women on to his team, Buzz McCoy is a true pioneer. National Real Estate Investor magazine has named him one of the “real estate icons” of the 20th Century for his ground-breaking work linking real estate financing to capital markets. In California, Mr. McCoy is perhaps best known for his efforts to revamp the CalPERS investment decision-making system. Professionally, Mr. McCoy has served as the former president of both Morgan Stanley Realty and the Counselors of Real Estate and currently serves as a life trustee of ULI. Mr. McCoy presently operates Buzz McCoy Associates in Los Angeles, where he conducts a consulting business along with his philanthropic, teaching, and writing activities. His next book, Living into Leadership: a Journey in Ethics will be available beginning in March.

A copy of Mr. McCoy’s book will be included with registration.

ULI Breakfast Tour Program – Broadway Plaza
8:00 AM-9:30 AM (27 Broadway Lane (former Nextel store) between Macy’s and Nordstrom, just past Build-A-Bear Workshop, Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek)
 Speakers:
Valerie Barone, Community Development Director, City of Walnut Creek
John Genovese, Senior Vice President of Development, The Macerich Company
Shelly Dress, Senior Property Manager, The Macerich Company
Broadway Plaza is an open-air regional shopping center located in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek. The center opened in 1951, and was acquired by The Macerich Company and its financial partner, Northwestern Mutual Life, in January of 1985. During their ownership, Macerich and NMLI have undertaken a dramatic redevelopment of the project’s 25.4 acres, transforming a series of incongruous outdoor shop space and a Bullock’s into one of the nation’s most productive retail projects - anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's - and in the process creating a center that is the definition of the “outdoor lifestyle center” retail property type. Broadway Plaza now boasts over 90 shops, services, and restaurants; its retail mix has been ranked among the best as well. Please join us for a tour of this highly successful project and a discussion of the challenges faced and ongoing management of the property. Special attention will be paid to dealings with Broadway Plaza’s numerous stakeholders as well as the project’s interface with the surrounding community.
