A supporter of Berkeley recently commissioned the following poster, which celebrates the Real Estate Program at Haas. The poster measure 17.5”x27” and the title reads “Berkeley: The Real Estate Program, Haas School of Business, University of California.” The caption at the bottom reads “Developing the Minds That Shape the Built Environment, http://haas.berkeley.edu/realestate”
Posters are available to BREC members for $10. A larger version of the image will be available on the BREC website shortly. A framed poster will be displayed at the BREC table during the Days At Haas Club Fair.

The kickoff of the CUB Mentorship Program was a great success! On March 23rd, 16 mentors/mentees met together at a pizza lunch in C220. Mentors were from the 2006 & 2007 MBA classes, the EWMBA program, and the City & Regional Planning department. Mentees were all members of Berkeley’s Undergraduate Real Estate Club (UREC). After a brief round of introductions, graduate students met one-on-one with their mentee. The event was well received by both the undergrads and grad students.
A 3rd year undergraduate student majoring in architecture explained, “I am interested in real estate but do not know how to approach it. Gaining insight from graduate students will help me a lot.” An MBA 2007 noted, “This is a meaningful thing and I am excited to spend my time on it.”
This was just the beginning--CUB’s goal is to provide additional opportunities for mentors and mentees to interact. In addition, undergrads were encouraged to reach out to their mentors on an ad hoc basis with any questions.
For those that missed the kickoff event, it is not too late to participate. Contact Kenneth Wu at jwu@haas.berkeley.edu with questions.

In June 2005, the United States Supreme Court held in Kelo v. New London that a city could condemn non-blighted owner occupied housing and convey it to a private party in furtherance of an economic development plan. In a closely divided decision, the Court found that the exercise of eminent domain under such circumstances met the requirement for a public use under the U.S. Constitution and that the courts should defer to the local legislative body’s determination of the need to condemn property for that purpose. There is debate in legal circles about whether the decision broke new ground in takings law. But the story of Kelo is not the significance of the case itself but the backlash in response to it. In this panel discussion we will focus on how the current system of laws governing eminent domain works and whether reform is needed, whether there should be a role for eminent domain the public/private partnerships, what legislation has been adopted and is proposed at the federal and state levels, and what the legislation, including proposed voter initiatives to amend the State constitution, may mean for the future of economic development and redevelopment particularly in urban areas in California. To make an appointment to meet with Tom, Craig or Doug, please email Ellen Wilson in the Haas Career Center as soon as possible and no later than midnight Tuesday 4/4 to express your interest and your appointment time availability. Let me know which of these PIR visitors you would like to meet with and specify the time slots for each PIR visitor that would work for your schedule. It’s fine to request appointments with more than one of these PIR visitors – please just include all your PIR appointment requests in one email to me and indicate your desired time slots for each visitor. If you do request appointments with more than one PIR visitor, please rank your choices so I know which meetings are most important to you. As always, give me a couple time slot options per visitor so that it is easier for me to arrange the schedules.
If you are also available to attend a lunch (or drinks in Craig Davey’s case), please let me know that as well. Up to 5 students can participate in the group sessions so please let me know if you’d be interested in this if I’m not able to give you one of the 30 minute interview slots.
In addition, please forward your resume and ACRE focus statement to Ellen no later than midnight Monday April 17th so that I can forward this information on to our PIR visitors. Please put “4/21 or 4/28 PIR interview” in the subject line of your emails to Ellen. These PIR informational interviews will be conducted in the Haas Career Center, S330, and your dress should be business casual.
