Hiring Process for Haas GSI and Reader Positions

Courses that have been allocated Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and/or Reader funds will be listed on the Haas GSI/Reader Recruitment Site. Funding guidelines are posted on the Faculty Funding Page).

An email is sent out to all hiring faculty a week before the upcoming semester's Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and Reader positions are advertised to notify faculty of funding allocations and pending deadlines. Summer Positions are announced by email in February of the hiring year. Fall positions are announced in March and Spring positions in October.

Application materials for GSI & Reader positions are viewable to hiring faculty on the Haas Recruitment Site (CalNet ID/password required). Directions for logging onto site and viewing submitted applications are available in .pdf.

Important Note: Hiring Instructors are advised to never make verbal promises to hire. Instead, Hiring Instructors may tell a candidate that “an offer, if forthcoming, will be made in writing via an appointment notification letter.” This will help to avoid situations where an individual cannot be hired due to failure to meet eligibility requirements. 

The Dean’s office recommends that all hiring faculty members meet with the final candidate in order to discuss the following:

  • Review duties/responsibilities that will be assigned.
  • Review weekly work hours and expectations for ASE.
  • Dates of midterm, final exams, and deadlines for work to be completed.
  • Sign the Description of Duties form.

Central campus and the Dean’s office also advises hiring faculty members to meet with their employee monthly to discuss any concerns that may arise and to provide opportunities for mentorship. A list of faculty and departmental responsibilities in preparing GSIs for teaching is available on the Grad Div site.

Once the hiring faculty member has selected a candidate for their position on the recruitment site (instructions.pdf), candidates will be contacted directly by the ASE Administrator to complete hiring paperwork. When all forms are completed, both the ASE and the hiring instructor will receive an email confirming that the appointment is complete.

The policy of the Haas School is to give priority for ASE appointments to eligible Haas students first, then other eligible UC Berkeley students, then eligible students from other UC campuses. In addition, the policy of the Haas School is to give priority for ASE appointments in Haas courses to advanced Haas PhD students first, then other Haas and UC Berkeley PhD students, then Haas MBA (and rarely undergraduate) students, before considering eligible non-UC Berkeley PhD students and others.

Hiring Process for Haas GSR positions

Funding for GSR positions is arrangeded through the individual hiring instructor's research budget or through a sponsoring program. Allocations should be indicated on the GSR Hiring Worksheet and submitted to the ASE Administrator by email. Interested GSR applicants communicate directly with the hiring parties until the ASE Administrator is asked to vet the candidate's credentials and process hiring paperwork.
